FLBN - Ch. 7

"What's going to happen to Max?"

She thought of a second, "Well it could be 1 of 2 things.
1) He will be dropped of all charges in the account that his psychologist finds him mentally unfit to stop himself from the accident. Therefore he would then have to resign from the PRT.

"Or
2) He will be charged with attempted murder without cause of doing so." She said it as if it didn't bother her in the slightest.

"But it's not like he did this to a member to one of our bases, right?" I said. There had to be some lesser charge he could face. Right?

She thought again, "Technically, yes…. So the sentencing of the charge will be a bit less severe. ... But since he can't convince the bases that his actions were just, he will have to face the charges given to him." Does she even have any emotion in her?

"But Avery and I are witnesses. Can't we give a-" Oh Arceus, what have I done? "No. No, no, no! That's not fair!"

She smirked. That son of bitch smirked! "But sadly, it is fair. You were all read your rights after the emergency response team came. I'm sorry, but unless Max can explain his actions in a sane state, I will have to convict him of unorthodox conduct and attempted murder from the testomony you just gave me."

"You tricked me. You tricked me didn't you? You tricked me into giving you what you wanted to hear. You tricked me!"

"I 'tricked' you into a testomony for the sake of the PRT," she retorted in an irritated fashion.

"You had no righ-!"

"I had every right in the book and so did you. You had 'the right to remain silent,' and now 'it can and will be used against you [Max] in the court of law' because I can't have an inane member of the PRT ruining the main mission of our cause-" she was shouting at this point. And I don't like being yelled at.

"And what is that? To take kids & teens from their lives - their human lives - just to train them for your little army? To force them away from their parents… their loved ones, to brainwash them into thinking that your cause is superior in this petty war effort, which has remained at a stalemate since before The Great War? To take them-" I was cutoff, almost in tears, but I held them back. It can let her have any sympathy over me.

"-Somewhere safe! Where they can live without being called a monster for being the way they are. To-" I cut her off.

She thinks we're still not called monsters? It's in the name, for Arceus' sake! Pocket. Monster.

"-Use them in Your war as pawns, as Your bullet proof vests, as Your meat-shields to keep You safe while they deal with all the heavy work. To let themselves die for something that may not even be worth dying for at such young ages!" I'm nearly in tears now.

I've seen them, kids, dying in this "war effort" fighting for what they think is "right." 10, 13, 9, 7, 16, even a 6 year old, I had a six year old die in my arms. He had no clue as to what was happening, he was scared, and to that shiny, little life disappear from his eyes…

I will never forget that day.

"Well aren't you the smart one. What do you suppose we do, huh? Just completely abandon our efforts, and just sit back and let X win? Or just let them go through their transformations and let their familys' deal with them as they please?

"Our efforts may not be foolproof, nor may it be backed by morals, but it's for sure the best thing we've got going at the moment. Without it every single one of their lifes' would be a lot different than it already is. Would it be better or worse than it is now? Beats me. But I will not have an ignorant Typhlosion bad mouthing the system that's been working since this had all began. So like I said before, right or wrong, right now it's the best thing we've got going for us Pokéumans."

I couldn't speak. Those eyes were burned in my mind at the moment. I couldn't even look at her. My eyes were shut as tight as possible.

I heard her open the door and start to walk out. "Have a nice day, Miss Xoey." She slammed the door shut and left.

----------------------

"How long has he been out?" I asked the nurse walking out of the Dewott's room.

"About 4 days now." There was sympathy in his voice

"Anything overly injured?"

"Luckily nothing above several broken bones, and moderate internal bleeding and bruising. You were lucky when you found him, Avery. Don't beat yourself up over what happened 4 days ago."
His concern for my wellbeing relieved me a bit, but why was he there? And why did Max freak out?

"I know, ...but it doesn't make any sense. You know?"

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, they're saying he was a rogue."

What's that supposed to mean? He's still one of us. Yeah, he's not apart of our cause really, but… he still deserves to be treated like us. Right?

"Not really, but alright. Thanks for telling me."

"Alright. See ya later?"

"Sure."

Thank Arceus, he's gone- Oh wait!

"Wait! Would it be alright if I went into his room?"

"U-uh… Sure? I guess. I don't see a problem with that. Why, if you don't mind me asking?"

No reason.

"Reasons."

"Mmm… k…" he looked at me weirdly, then he walked away.

I walked in slowly and took a seat in a chair by the side of his bed. I had to admire the amount of tubes and wires and machines they're using on him even though "he's only a Rogue." If this is all the stuff they'd use for a Rogue, I'm scared to see what they'd use for a Pokéuman.

The monitor showing all his vitals, I'm guessing, has several color-coated wires attached to it. His pulse line seems weak. Instead of the usual *be-beep*, it's giving off a rhythmic *beep beep*. And that feeding tube doesn't seem all that comfortable. The little vile thing connected between the IV and the bag of fluid keeps making a tiny drip, drip sound.

So much is happening in this room, yet there's very little action going about.

Then I see him. From all the wires to their machines, and all the tubes to their holes in wall, they all led to one that one Dewott.

I finally broke the silence, "... Wow. Looks like Max really got you good with his final attack. Heh, it's funny to think that it's been four days since then. It seems like only a few hours ago we came rushing through those ER doors after being picked up. …

I paused.

"It was four days ago, but I still remember it. The memory's so vivid and lucid. I feel like there wasn't a single detail left out, including the minor ones. That first Surf attack you pulled... it was incredibly powerful, heh, and you kinda took us by surprise, but that's beside the point.

I thought for a second.

"…The point is… why did you go rogue? It makes nonsense to me. I mean, at the bases you've got food, shelter, protection, virtually everything! So what could have caused you to leave all of that, possible your loved ones, your friends? Just why?"

I sat in a loud silence.

"Because we wanted to."

I jumped at the sound of his voice. I was already in a ready position to fight him.

"Your-!"

"-Awake? Yeah I woke up about 10 minutes ago, but I didn't want to ruin your moment with that nurse fellow from a few minutes ago."

"So… Did you hear everything?"

"Yes."

"And…?"

"And what?"

"And your answer?"

"Like I said before, because we wanted to."

"You're saying we. Who's we?"

"My girlfriend (at the time), her brother, and I."

"What was your actual reason for leaving though? It couldn't have been just because. There's no way anyone would leave their base with all those thing I just listed off."

"Let me answer it with a question. How did you decide to become a member of the PRT when you were of age? Were you pressured in a way that forced you to join? Because I highly doubt that when that day came, when that day appeared on the calendar, you just suddenly felt like this was The Job For You that you want to do for the rest of your life, or at least until you're broken and they don't need you anymore."

I just sat there and listened. Maybe he has a point, but it was different for me.

"Now, don't get me wrong, sometimes that is the case for some people. Sometimes they actually want that, but I don't see you as that type of person, …Avery is it? I see it like this. Option A: You join them when you're of age because you actually want to and aren't pressured in the slightest (excluding self-pressuring that is)." He stopped.

"And option B?" I pushed him to go on.

"Or option B: If you didn't join the PRT when you became of age, you would then be laughed at, mocked, scrutinized, called weak, etc. by friends, strangers, some teachers, etc. In my case, this is what happened. My friends joined and antagonized me for not joining along with them. Everyday a few of my teachers, past and present, would press me on why I'm still not in it, how I can't show my true power until I join, and all of that sort. I kept getting in fights with random people after hours. Mostly PRT guys telling me how useless I am,and how much of a waste of space I am that just leeches off of the life the base provides for me.

"So one day, I begged my girlfriend, now my wife, to run away with me. She didn't turn it down, but she wanted her brother to come with us."

There was happiness and sadness in his voice.

"So we tried to sneak out of the base, but her brother tripped an alarm. He didn't make it out of the base, but we made it and then kept running to get away from the PRT. By the time we were finally safe for once in our lives. We settled down in that area."

Anymore?   …    No? Talk about harsh. But where's his wife?

"Well, what happened to your wife?"

"…… Sadly … she died a few months after the escape. We decided to have an egg after we ran away, but she died before the egg was supposed to hatch."

He finished that sentence with such ease. It's like this isn't the first time he's told this story to someone.

"… H-how'd she die? -If you don't mind me asking that is. …"

"… We were attacked by some Rogues. One of them dragged her underground; the other one decided to use Earthquake. …Hmph… always hated that move."

"You and me both."

We shared our set of giggles for a second there. …

"So, the tunnel caved on her…"

… But of course I had to ruin the mood.

"Yeah… I 'took care of' the one guy and then tried to dig her out as fast as I could, but when I'd finally found her twenty-or-so feet below the surface…," he stopped and held back his tears.

"And the one that dragged her down?"

"… … …"

Silence?

"Oh. He lived?"

"Oh no! He was dead."

He got angry. Still sad, but very angry.

"Then…"

What was it?

"I'd rather not say."

"What about your egg?"

"Well, after everything had gone down, it had minor scratches on it, but it also had a small crack on it."

"So it survived and hatched?"

"Yes and yes, thank Arceus."

A few minutes of silence and I broke it with something I've been meaning to ask him.

"Why were you walking in that area where we found you? And why'd you fight back?"

"Why was I walking in that area? Well I was trying to get away from civilization for a little bit. And I also needed to get my hu-m-my camp. I needed to get back to my camp I made around there."

Uh huh….

"Then I heard you guys. I tried to stay quite and let you pass, but of course, that didn't work out so well. I didn't want to go back to a base, so I fought back and tried to escape, but of course, that didn't work out."

Hmph. No it did not. …

"Avery.
Mind if we have a word with you?" The nurse interrupted our conversation.

"Yeah, I'll be right there." I got up and walked until the end of his bed. I stopped. "It was nice talking with you. And, I'm sorry about your wife."

"…" He remained silent. Tears were starting to form in his eyes.

Hmm, how peculiar. His eyes… they're silver? I've never seen anything like them before. They're so mesmerizing and empty and…

"Why are your-"

"Avery please, we haven't got all day. You can question to the rogue later."

That damned nurse interrupted me again.

"So long, Mr. Dewott." I walked out and added as I past the nurse, "Oh! And by the way, he's not a rogue."
For Lack of a Better Name - Chapter 7: And What's the Deal With Airline Food?

3195 words! And to think only 1125+ of that is dialogue. I don't know. I'm trying out a different style of writing. A merge of 1st and 2nd person view points is what I'm trying to make work. I think it will really make this story POP if I can "master" it.

Oh well. Chapter 8 will be out in a few weeks hopefully. And a new drawing in maybe a week.
